Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal, metabolic and reproductive condition affecting an estimated 6–13% of reproductive-aged women. Although the numbers are suspected to be higher because up to 70% of affected women remain undiagnosed worldwide.

PCOS affects physical and emotional well-being of an individual and significantly impacts their quality of life. It can cause hormonal imbalances, irregular periods and excess androgen levels. The biological and psychological effects of PCOS, particularly those related to obesity, body image and infertility, can lead to mental health challenges and social stigma.

PCOS is a chronic condition and cannot be cured. However, some symptoms can be improved through lifestyle changes, medications and fertility treatments.

The cause of PCOS is unknown.

Notes on Advocacy

Ad·vo·ca·cy. n. identifying, embracing, and promoting a cause. Advocacy can influence public opinion as well as public policy.

📝 In 2022, while living in New York City as a graduate student, I went searching for others who understood life with PCOS. That search led me to the PCOS Challenge: The National Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Association, where I met incredibly resilient individuals, people not just managing PCOS but thriving despite it. Their stories inspired me.

🩵 I learned that sharing my story wasn’t just about being heard—it was about healing. When I opened up about my experiences, I found support, clarity, and strength. And in listening to others, I realized I was never alone. Healing, I discovered, begins in community. Vulnerability is a profound strength.

💪🏽 PCOS is a condition with an unknown cause and no cure. Research is underfunded, treatment options are limited, and too many people struggle in silence. Advocacy is how we bridge the gaps—how we push for better care, deeper research, and a future where those with PCOS no longer feel unheard or unseen.

🌸 As a PCOS Patient Advocate, my vision is to explore what advocacy can look like—for ourselves, for each other, and for the larger community. This space is about finding the courage to lead with compassion and curiosity. You can learn about my PCOS journey here.

Advocacy is like planting seeds, we may not see the full bloom today, but with care, persistence, and community, change takes root.
